Can You Do The Kieselguhr, Kid?

I dunno, this just struck me as germane.

  3. I'm actually gonna let that bit o' spam stay up because it exposes a practice that I'm sure Thomas Pynchon has very strong feelings about.

This World of Warcraft Gold being touted here: WOW is a very very popular online game -- my son spends just eons playing it -- and this gold being touted here is the basic fuel of the game. With it, more power in the game; without it, you are poor and downtrodden.

The thing is, this virtual gold is for sale because it's been won by Chinese laborers (and, of course, laborers from other Asian countries) and then harvested by their employers. People are actually paid -- an absolute pittance, sweatshop labor wages -- to play World of Warcraft. Then their winnings are collected by their exploiters and sold to Westerners for an enormous markup.

Virtual money. Completely fucking meaningless money. For a game. Being harvested by hardfaced sons of bitches from a sweatshop full of people playing a completely fucking meaningless game.

And sold to punks in the West so that they can feel like they've put in an honest day's toil in the game world and don't have to put in any virtual work.

    Funny old world...

Here's one WOW player's reaction when he realized what was going on.
