Talk about 'between' - how about between the rhythm, the cadence, the *other*notes, playing so against...! The drummer & bass player lust laying it down, straight, so he can leap and dodge, land both feet solid, float away.
Why would he play this way? Why not simply fall in line? What is he getting at? What exists in those spaces between where you *want* him to play, where he's *supposed* to play...?
Listen to him setup the drum solo - and with (if I'm not mistaken) Basie starin' 'im right in the face... why wouldn't he try to play right?
